Subiaco (sometimes known as Subi) is an inner-western suburb of Perth, Western Australia’s capital. It is located in the City of Subiaco local government region, about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) west of Perth’s central business district. Historically a working-class neighbourhood with a mix of industrial and commercial land uses, the region has been one of Australia’s most recognized urban regeneration initiatives since the 1990s. Subiaco Primary School, Perth Modern School, the state’s only entirely academically selective public school, and Bob Hawke College are located in the neighborhood. Subiaco’s landmarks include the Subiaco Oval, which was formerly Western Australia’s largest stadium, the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, and the Subiaco railway station. Prior to European arrival, the Noongar Indigenous people lived in the region. Italian Benedictine monks moved in the region around 1851. The monks named the place after Subiaco, Italy, where Benedict of Nursia, the Order of Saint Benedict’s founder, began his mission. Subiaco Oval, also known as Domain Stadium, Mueller Park, the Regal Theatre, the Subiaco Hotel, the Victorian terraces on Catherine Street, and the Subiaco Arts Centre are among the suburb’s landmarks.
