Ballajura gets its name from the farm founded by the Kerruish, Eaton, and Creer families and owned by the Kerruish family until 1944. The site was thereafter utilized for livestock rearing until substantial urban expansion began in 1978. Emu Lake is a major key feature in the area. The lake served as a source of water and food for the Aboriginal inhabitants prior to civilization. The Ballajura region was initially occupied in 1905, when Ernest Maltby Kerruish, an immigrant from the Isle of Man, acquired the property for a farm near what is now Caversham. Ballajora was named after a farm in Maughold, Isle of Man. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 Population and Housing Census, the population of the Ballajura postcode area was 18,704 in an area of 8.9 square kilometers (3.4 sq mi). Residents of Australian origin made up 59 percent of the population. There are four elementary schools in the neighbourhood (Ballajura, South Ballajura, Illawarra, and Mary MacKillop Catholic Primary School) and one high school (Ballajura Community College) (BCC). There is no railway line in the Ballajura region, however there are various local bus routes that run directly to the city.
